Description
Developed by the Romans and brought to Portugal two thousand years ago, Talha Wine today is the greatest symbol of the Alentejo, a region that has managed to preserve this traditional winemaking process. A know-how that has been passed down from generation to generation, according to the taste of History and its events, establishing a cultural heritage of its own, which must be preserved and included in the cultural legacy of the region of Vidigueira, the heart of the Talha Wine.
This technique of making wine in large clay pots, the amphorae or Talhas, has survived the centuries and, due to its simplicity and naturalness, it has long been part of the Alentejo’s daily life. Any farmer with a vineyard, no matter how small, could not do without his own “talhinha” (or little clay pot) to make wine for personal consumption and to give to friends to taste.
This method of production is rooted in the cultural customs of the Vidigueira region and in the habits of the people of the Alentejo. At the end of a day’s work, the custom of going to the tavern, a place where people meet, “sing” and chat, to socialise and drink a glass of this nectar, remains virtually untouched.
Talha wine was on the verge of disappearing, but in recent decades it has gained greater popularity among consumers, and more and more producers are using this fermentation technique made 100% in clay pots – each one introducing its own variations, according to local tradition and personal taste.
At the Vidigueira, Cuba and Alvito Winemaking Cooperative, we remain faithful to the most traditional process, making our Talha Wine in the most artisanal and manual way possible. With Casa das Talhas, we celebrate this ancestral way of making and give you a taste of a unique product, natural in its essence and complex in its personality.
